I’ve heard it said that churches expect people to “believe before they can belong”, and we need to make sure that people feel they can belong (in the feeling welcomed sense) before they believe. I remember my mother instructing me to stay away from the non-believer kids in youth group “until they become Christians”, and I never agreed with her thinking on this.

True. We are asking people to leave their culture, participate in our sub-culture, and then after a while, they can catch on to what our central message is all about. After sorting through our stuff, they can meet the One that gives hope and meaning. Well said Ernest.
