Ok, I am late to this, real late. But... I like what you write. I am a former M, missions pastor for 10 years, currently in a Mega Ch, with a new pragmatic leader. We are so pragmatic now, that I have to ask where God went. It's like the god of adv and marketing just appeared. You are nailing it! I love it ! I will be back. Money quote:

What’s wrong with practicing pragmatism? It tells people that we serve a pragmatic God. But we don’t. Ours is a God who time and time again shows Himself to do the opposite of what we would do.

The scriptures are full of illustrations of God leading his people to do the counterintuitive thing. (The battle of Jericho is my favorite!)

The thing that strikes me in all of this is that each church should be a unique body, dealing with the "world" in which it operates. The Holy Spirit is the real administrator and his direction will always put the church in a right position with God. When all churches look alike, I wonder who is really in charge.

While all churches should preach, teach, worship, mentor, love, and serve, they should all do those things as God leads uniquely. If all Bible traditional churches look and feel the same, if I can predict the next part of a contemporary service, if every church in every town looks and feels the same, where is the Holy Spirit?

Just thinking out loud ...
